MA Design Final Project

'The Cave Theatre'

The aim of this project is to devise a contemporary theatre that takes audience’s experience and understanding of a theatre to a different level by means of more interactive settings and techniques. The idea of the ‘Cave Theatre’ as an example of a modern interactive setting for theatrical performance was developed through a series of previous observations and experiences. The main experience that led to this idea was, however, a pilot project conducted on devising a modern stage design for the ‘Swan Lake’ ballet as a course work during studying the MA Design.

Another factor influencing the development of the idea was an intention to bridge between designer’s background experience and skills, in graphic design and illustration work, and interior design as a new field that has been explored more recently. From this point of view, designing a theatre is an extremely interesting practice in the sense that it allows the designer to make use of illustrations and other means of visual communication to create a three-dimensional space.
